Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets each build distinctly different nests and have different aggression levels — yellow jackets in particular are considerably more defensive of their nest than paper wasps, and a nest disturbed without the right approach can result in multiple stings.

Nest location matters as much as species: a nest in a wall void or underground (common for yellow jackets) is a different removal job than an exposed paper wasp nest under an eave, which is why this is usually not a safe DIY project once a nest is established.
