House mice can squeeze through gaps as small as a quarter-inch, reproduce quickly (a female can have several litters a year), and cause real damage by gnawing on wiring, insulation, and stored goods — beyond the contamination risk to food and surfaces.

Sealing entry points is as important as trapping; removing the current population without closing off how they got in usually means a new population moves in within months.
